LIBRARY AND KNOWLEDGE SERVICES TRAINING PROGRAMME 

​There is so much information out there and to ensure that you are using the correct tools and techniques, the Library and Knowledge Service provides a range of training programmes to assist you:
Literature Searching
Finding the Evidence
Duration 60 - 90 mins

At the end of the course participants will be able to: 
  • Develop an effective search strategy for a research topic by identifying key concepts, search terms and synonyms
  • Select an appropriate database for conducting a search
  • Use the correct techniques for combining search terms
  • Use the thesaurus to search the databases more effectively
  • Save, email and print journal references retrieved
  • Acquire the articles/documents in full text, either directly from the databases or from Library services

Critical appraisal is the process of carefully and systematically examining research to judge its trustworthiness, and its value and relevance in a particular context.

A number of concepts will be introduced and explained in a plain style using real world examples. To back up the learning exercises will be used throughout in this interactive workshop.

The areas covered;
  • Statistical significance (hypothesis testing, pvalues)
  • Confidence Intervals
  • Power calculations
  • Diagnostic testing (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value)
  • Meta-analysis (Forest plots)
